Personality: Sandry is above all: friendly, dedicated, proud, and stubborn. Oh so stubborn. Once she sets her mind to something she will do it. Whether that's making friends or doing a piece of magic, Sandry has an iron will. If she wants to make something happen she won't stop trying until she literally can't anymore. This stubbornness has seen her make friends with the other residents of the cottage she lived in, fight off the unmagic that tried to make her give into nothingness, or stand by her uncle’s side when he was ill. If things aren’t going well she simply tries and tries again, believing that with patience she can accomplish anything. But some things don’t require patience and she simply uses her power, both magical and noble born, to get what she wants, such as when she wrapped up people barring her way in thread cocoons in order to incapacitate them.
Sandry believes that she can be friends with just about anyone she decides is worth it. She’s very outgoing and chatty, and is willing to talk about most topics. “Noble” and “proper lady” topics tend to bore her; she has no interest in marriage or other “well bread” conversations. She can’t stand people who look down on others and think of themselves too highly, which meant that she spent most of her life making friends with commoners despite being one step away from royalty. As an extrovert, Sandry is very outgoing and will make conversation with just about any stranger; they’re a friend until proven otherwise.
Her friendliness and stubbornness combine into her dedication. Sandry will always be there for a friend in need or a loved one, and even extends this out to strangers. She believes strongly in supporting Emelan and its people, remarking once that she didn’t see the point in being a mage if she couldn’t help people suffering from a drought. But she’s dedicated to more than just those around her. Her magic is very important to her and Sandry treats it with great respect, practicing regular meditation to keep it organized and in check.
Pride is both one of Sandry’s virtues and vices. It’s a virtue because she uses pride to fuel some of her good deeds, but also lets it carry her away. In a later book it nearly stops her from deciding to sign away some of her lands to a caretaker who actually cares for them, while Sandry has been guilty of shirking her duty. Sometimes her pride gets in the way of seeing reason and it takes her friends to help her come around.
While typically very strong and independent, Sandry has one significant weakness: the dark. Sandry’s fear of the dark is not just nerves, but trauma born from being locked away in a dark cell to save her from the smallpox. In the dark she is reduced to crying and begging for someone to help her bring light and struggles to find any composure. Thankfully her determination to make friends brought together her siblings who made her a crystal light, one of her two prized (material) possessions.
One thing Sandry hates is being objectified. Nothing gets her angry as fast as being treated like she's "just a noble" or "just a girl" or "just a mage." She expects people to treat her like a whole encompassing person and treat her with respect. When those things don't happen she gets quite angry and might even throw a little tantrum in private! On the flip side... she can sometimes get "on her nobility" (as her friends call it) and expect people to treat her with the respect due to a noble one step away from royalty. Sometimes she likes to have her cake and eat it too.
Abilities: Ambient thread magic. Sandry is able to manipulate any thread and cloth, as well as the fibers that go into them. This means she can also lay enchantments in the cloth, such as making it never wrinkle, never hold a stain, or enchantments for protection. She is also able to use magic like a thread, allowing her to do things like spin or weave it, or attach it to someone. It has some abstract applications such as when she untied a knot to relieve a cramp in someone's leg.
